Frequently Asked
Questions

Requirements, Salary, Timings and Location

When will the programme be open for applications?

Applications will open at the beginning of February 2023 and close end of March 2023.

Are language skills necessary?

Language skills are not essential, but we are always keen to hear from applicants who are fluent in second languages.

Will I have a permanent role after the two-year programme finishes?

At the end of the programme, you’ll have earned a permanent Client Manager role in one of the Client Service teams subject to completion of the requirements on the training programme.

Is there a clear path for career development?

Starting as a trainee, you’ll become a Client Manager with the opportunity to progress into a Director role over time. If you have the ambition and talent, you could even become a partner in the firm. Baillie Gifford is wholly owned by 57 partners who work in the firm on a daily basis.

How many places are there on the programme?

We typically recruit three to six people to the programme each year.

Are there opportunities for flexible working?

Most Client Managers work from 9-5 Monday – Friday. However, we are open to requests for flexible working.

Does it matter how long I have been in my career to date?

We consider applications from people who have been in their current careers for any length of time. More important are the right skills and an aptitude for the role.

Is there a minimum degree requirement?

Yes. Although we consider applicants from all disciplines, we typically expect a minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent.

What is the salary for this role?

Successful candidates will start on £55,000 per annum with a bonus and salary review annually.

If I was successful, when would I start?

All successful candidates will join in September 2023.

How long is the process, and when are the interviews?

We will start reviewing applications after the role has closed. You will receive an automated response when you submit your application to confirm that we have received it. If you are successful, first-stage interviews will be conducted over Zoom in April. This will be followed by the second stage, which will be in our office in Edinburgh in May.

Do you sponsor international visa requirements?

We welcome applications for our roles from all suitably qualified candidates. If candidates do not currently have the right to work, we will support an application for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker regime. We can sponsor candidates on a visa for the majority of our roles, however, where a candidate does require sponsorship, they will need to meet the minimum requirements set by the government.
